It's surprising those who support Koizumi's visit to Yasukuni on 8.15
are mostly in their 20s.
I think that's because Yoshinori Kobayashi affects them.

In a criminal proceeding, you prove intent through action.
A person can say that they never wanted to kill someone, but if facts prove that the person bought the murder weapon 3 days in advance, made sure that the murdered was at the murder scene in advance, etc that person’s words mean nothing.
If a person confesses to a crime, but there is no substantial corroborating evidence, that person cannot be convicted.
In short, word/communication means little when you want to prove their intent. It takes faith.
Granted body language is a form of communication, but how do you know if that person meant what that body language means in your culture.
Example: I show you the middle finger, but I was just stretching my middle finger to see if it functions properly. :-)
However, intent does not mean anything, because usually people get offended against the above action.
How would I back that up? Maybe the Seinfeld excuse, “At least I didn’t go through the trouble of showing you the middle finger of my foot."

Love is a funny thing in that intent means as much as action, perhaps even more.
When you sleep over at a friend’s house who happens to be of the same sex as your lover, the action as well as intent comes to question.
Rarely does “the intent was good” excuse, get you off.

To k-tan.

Thanks for letting me know what sorbet is.:)
And it's good to hear you getting into shape.
Keep taking care of yourself.

Not that I didn't know シャーベット in Japanese.

I was lazy I didn't look up sorbet in the dictionary and
no I didn't know what sorbet meant in Japanese. It turned out it was
a matter of pronunciation, though.

>>47
are you sure you've never tried? I thought all Japanese
have it them a fridge. It's good for conspitation.

>>48
Oh that makes me feel relieved a little (なんのこっちゃ?)
anyway if you like sorbet, please eat them as much as you want.
but be careful! you'll get stomachache lol

In the mean time, I eat vanilla ice cream.

I'm not Japanese.

>>51
Oh sorry. then you woudn't know.
I always keep konnyaku jelly in a freezer at least 3 bags.
apple, grape and mango; something like that.
and eat whenever I feel like. it's like a frozen
jelly. if you try to put a simple jelly in a freezer, it would be still
good but konnyaku jelly is more ...hard to chew, so I like it mroe than simple ones.

Someday I would like to try konnyaku jelly.

54 :Kouki:2006/08/26(土) 16:12:56
>>49
I like ice cream, too, though I don't eat it everyday.
As far as I'm concerned, mint icecream with chocolate chips in it
is really good.

I really like mint-choc chip ice-cream.

>>54
Oh! That's exactly the same with me!! (^^)/
My favorite is mint with chocochip!!
well...I don't eat ice cream everyday, but I eat konnyaku jelly
almost everyday, about 5 of them. but each of them are quite small...lol

<<53
yes please try!

I'll try to buy some konnyaku jelly tomorrow.

58 :Kouki:2006/08/26(土) 16:23:11
>>55-56
We have the same taste for ice cream.:)

Concerning the jelly food, do you mean Konnyaku batake?
I sometimes eat some when I have a chance.

>>58
Oh yeah. Konnyaku batake is the most famous brand I think.^^

>>57
That's a good idea! but is it easy for you to get some Japanese foods
in your country? for me, it's a bit hard to buy some imported foods in
a local area like this. But I once はまる(I gave myself over to??)
one particular snack. The name was....ummm....Snyder's honey mustard!!lol
So whenever I see them in an imoprt shop, I bought a lot lol. Do you like those snacks?

>>59

It's pretty easy for me to get Japanese food.

I've never tried that snack.

>>60
I see. are you in Asia or North America?
lol I just feel those two areas are most common for the people to access
Japan sites...well...I jst felt that way lol

You don't know Snyder's? Honey mustard? creamy caramel or garlic bread? really?

How about the detergent? what do you use? Ivory? or Tide? lol... (am I too bored...??) lol

>>61

I live in Australia.

I don't think Snyder's is sold here. Those detergents are sold here, but my family uses a different brand.

I'm going out now. It was nice talking to you. Maybe we can talk again another day.

Hmmm... Only if you assume that people will react the same way if you share
and are aware of the exact same data, will that article make any sense.

It's only a part of her. Just because her fart is smelly,
it doesn't mean she smells awful.

>>114
I see.

Angel is the term which applys to only Maki chan.

Are you crazy? I don't think the news is made up by the media.
Yukorin tried to deny she's dating with him.

Which is the cutest girl of the three, Yukorin, Maki chan and Emma?

Not Emma.

You must be kidding.
If a girl is cute, then her fart smells unbelievable as well.

You are making fun of the 37aged man.

Maki chan is his angel.

Judging from their looks, Maki chan is the cuttest, but
I don't say either Yukorin and Emma are uglier than pedestrian
people.

Hey! We should keep focus on the 37aged man and Emma's romance here.
If they get married, it will be big news to both Japan and England.

It would be big news to all the world.

You're the one who should keep quiet.
This is a democratic nation where people can exchange thier
opinions freely. He just expressed his opinion, which in itself
is allowed and accepted.
Why don't you speak up for Emma then? We don't consider her
as the best girl of the three. It's a matter of opinion.
You too have the right to defend her. Come on!

It would come as a big surprise to all of us if Yamamoto went out

if you like Emma just because she's a little girl, you should not get
married to her, coz as she grows older, you will soon look for another
little girls. It's the best you stay single and just date with little
girls. (buy some candies for them. Try and stay as a good ojisan (kind Mr nice man)

I don't think Emma knows the guy in question lives to meet her,
talk to her, and get married to her. Why don't we get together
and make efforts to let her know her big fan is asking for marrieage?

But you don't have to worry about it, school girl.
If other girls want attention, they should talk to us,

named herself as school girl. That's the plan.

I'm watching a drama. The story is about a fake marriage.
They have 1 year's contract. Actually the man hired the girl. The house
is hers but she's met an actionable fraud and he bought that house. She
wanted to get the house back so he suggested her to be his fake wife. She has
to clean the house, cook etc with no salary. But if she works satisfactrily,
she could get the house back. There are many terms and conditions on the contract.
This drama was hilarious!

she sounded very uncomfortable to be called as nekama.
you are saying the school girl is a male again? I hope you
don't start this over again. She might not come back.

Hey, guys. How do you think when non-native speakers use wrong English
such as missing article or prepositional mistakes and so on.
I don't care, in my case, that my conversation is full of mistake, but I can
communicate with natives. That's the point, isn't it?
How do you do at the moment that you have no confidence for your grammaer
or what you exactly want to say? Let me know.

Nice. I hope you'll have a good time! ^_^

>>260
There are a lot of girls who do so, to my knowledge. Especially amongst
those who play online computer games. They do this because it gives too
many problems and distractions of the guys know that they're actually
girls. I do know some gamer girls who are themselves and demand as much
respect as any other gamer, "in spite of" being female, though. :-D
They're awesome, in many ways.

>>261
Some people use alterative identites online as an escape from a reality
they do not like. I used to know a guy who liked to pretend he was a girl,
because he liked being very girly, and didn't like that he had to surpress
those sides of himself in real life in order to not be shunned by his
friends. Hmm... I haven't seen him for ages, I should email him to make
sure he's okay. I wonder how he and his girlfriend are doing.

I think it's fine for non-native speakers to have mistakes, as long as there isn't so many mistakes that it's impossible to understand. It annoys me when native speakers make a lot of mistakes though.

>>263
I think that would be fine for me.
But we, Japanese tend to be very picky on some grammatical mistakes.
The point is what the person is saying. Even how beautiful words
the one uses, if the content is very poor, that's nothing.
Language is just a tool.

-__-;; I could have sworn there weren't any typos in my post when I
read through it before posting.

>>263
I do not feel it's a problem, as long as I can understand what they're
saying. Not that I'm not a fellow non-native English speaker... If their
message is too ambiguous, I just ask them to rephrase, or to elaborate
on their message.

>>265
Just because someone's a native doesn't mean they're actually good at
their language. It is however true that usually they've had a better
chance at it, as they're constantly exposed to the language.

>>269

I actually speak English as a first language and I constantly find that some of my friend's English is so poor that I can't understand it.

I don’t expect that because they are a native speaker, they'll be perfect, but I do expect that they’d at least be able to get their point across clearly.

True, though apart from that some people genuinely have difficulties
with communicating due to good reasons (perhaps they suffer from
dyslectia, or any other affliction that hinders them communicating
in various channels, whether it be verbally or via the written word)
there are also people who have just learned to simply be too lazy.
Like one of my aquaintances. If he has to write a formal essay, he
can cough up some damned good writing. But over chat and such it's
so very horrible to communicate with him, as he not only uses too
many internet-slang words, but also keeps misspelling every other word.
He blames it on typing too quickly, but it doesn't require much effort
to toss an eye at one's sentence before hitting "submit",
or even just to look at what one is writing while writing it -___-;;

But it is true how you speak is how you are.
Even in this 2channel, I find some speak 2channel languages and saying
things that doesn't make sense while some decent person say things
so rational with decent manner, being careful with his choice of
words. And most imoprtantly if there is an air of warm heart?? I feel
like I want to talk to that person more. So of course in English too,
I feel good when I read some posts with no errors and with appropriate
expressions etc.

>>272
I have come across people lately who continue to write in the same way they would online with slang and deliberate misspellings in formal essays.

in any way... But I do try to find typos before submitting.
I merely fail to find them sometimes...

some jokes in the end.

281 :k-tan ◆teb9WQfPoU :2006/08/27(日) 21:26:18
>>280
The internet is "only" yet another medium. In other words, it can be both serious
as well as entertaining. Professionalism isn't about avoiding being funny, either.
Professionalism is about not using things which are inappropriate for a certain
place/moment, when it comes to the atmosphere, as well as being fairly
consistent in overall tone and attitude. Entertainment is very good,
and very appropriate to use even when it comes to more serious things,
as long as it's done right. This as people focus and remember entertaining
things better, though the accuracy of the content isn't supposed to suffer
when being conveyed in a more humorous tone.
But then again, I'm too fond of amusement, regardless of if it's in real
life, or online. Have you ever read any of Terry Pratchett's books, by the
way? Or anything by Douglas Adams, perhaps?

Yeah, two volumes of the Death comics, five or seven volumes of the Sandman
series, his book American Gods, Neverwhere, Last Temptation, Smoke and Mirrors:
Short Fictions and Illusions, The Tragical Comedy or Comical Tragedy of Mr. Punch,
Midnight Days, Coraline and that's pretty much it, so far, if I remember correctly.
(huzzah for amazon, wikipedia and similar, it's good to be able to look up an author and see things
he/she has written, so that one doesn't have to remember most of the book titles by heart)

Hmm.. It may sound as if I'm a fan of his, but I don't see myself as that.
I feel I care too little about the author's life to be a fan. I merely
am rather willing to read books I have not yet read by him, as I know
that I find his normal style interesting, regardless of topic.
I've read too many books in my life anyway, so all the books by him that
I've read are merely like a drop in the sea.

...What is it that he will do? All I know is that his contract with
the studio has not been renewed, because they felt he had gone overboard...

338 :k-tan ◆teb9WQfPoU :2006/08/28(月) 13:26:59
I should prepare for school and run off soon -__-;;;
see you all later.

I heard Swedish girl is the decathlon champion and very popular.

>>337
well...I'm not sure...but he suddenly got so excited and jumped on TV show
and ran like crazy. He is an enthusiatic follower of the cult. That's what I've heard.^^;;

I just wish he'd continue to act unchanged, because he is a very talented actor!!

>>340
Apparently he also upset some people by making comments about how Brooke Shields shouldn't take medication for her depression.

>>341
He even critisized his mate?

That episode remind me of Takanohana (a famous former sumo wrestler)
couple years ago. He was brainwashed
by one shady guy?? and he's criticized about his big bro. Then their
relationship got worse....etc.....^^;;

I hope Tom Cruise get back to the coolest guy again! I like him a lot!

>>342
I don't know why he was brainwashed or he just wanted someone to trust
coz he had been only doing sumo from early years. I think their relationship
is ok now. Tom Cruise is maybe in the same situation. He wants something
to trust? and finally find something fits him? but cult?.....^^;;

All I know about Yukorin is that apparently her farts smell like vanilla.

Is that all? It's said she's dating with Hamaguchi.

What are you saying? We've been talking about Yukorin.

"Aren't you confused, are you?" doesn't realy make sense.

Ahh, you shouldn't force yourself to be too cheerful. Remember one
thing: No matter how you act or who you are, there will always be people
who will downright hate you exactly because of the way you are, as
well as people who will love you because of exactly the same reasons.
As well as a lot of people who are indifferent, of course. The only
thing that varies are the percentages of the amount of people, in these
three way over-generalized groups.
_ So don't pay too much attention to comments that are only said as an
attempt to hurt your feelings (though it's good to be aware of how one comes
across to different people, so that you can modify your behaviour if you
discover that there is something genuinely not good with it). You may be
perceived as strange by many, but that doesn't make you bad, or less worth.
Because no matter what, you will always be perceived as very strange, the only
question is by whom. That applies to us all.

520 :k-tan ◆teb9WQfPoU :2006/08/30(水) 04:31:38
>>467
_ "Strange" is an as relative word as "better", "worse" or "exotic". If people
perceive you as strange or not, depends on what they're used to, and what
their personal opinions of what standard behaviours are.
_ For instance, a crowd of loligoth people are more likely to think a certain
loligoth person is cool and not strange, than a group of convervative elders.
_ Not liking groups is fine. It's not about how many friends you have, but
what kind of friends you have and why. If one likes to have tons of
aquaintances, and a few special people, that's just as good as having a few
special people, provided that either works well with the rest of your
life. Both situations have their ups and downs, and so does everything
inbetween those, etc. As long as it makes you happy, it's good. Not having
any friends at all usually makes people feel quite sad, though. Which is why I
was concerned about your statements about not having any friends at all.

Matsumoto gets angry (Matsumoto is a famous TV personality in Japan.)

You know, there are times when I angry. A lot. ---Like what?
I was driving. There was this narrow road. Of course I didn't even want
to do go that way, but I had to. An older lady and a kid were walking there.
The kid was dragging a toy behind. The lady looked at it as if
it was cute or something. In the middle of the road!!!
What were they thinking! ---Well, maybe they just didn't notice you.
They didn't notice me at all! So here's the question.
What would you do, as the person behind the wheel?
---Honk the horn. ---Precisely. ---Not too loud. ---That was a good answer!
I did so. I did it as soft as I could. But you know, horns are always loud.
It's not about how soft you press it. It's about the length of the honk!!!
So the lady was eyeing me. I was like "Give me break, this isn't a walkway"
But I'm an adult, I don't get mad over that like I would have in the past.
I rolled down the window and asked "What?" The lady screamed "You startled the kid!"
---So what happened next? ---I was still talking to the lady.
Then, I don't know where the hell he came from, an oldman with a huge dog.
"Just because you're a TV personality, you think you can get away with anything?"
As if I did it just because I'm on TV!

---Maybe you were following them and did it on purpose.
So she was saying "You startled the kid!"
But the kid and the big dog became silent. Not startled in the least.
So, suppose they were, even though that was so totally not the case.
What is so bad about startling a kid? Is it wrong to startle a kid?
To raise a kid in this world without startling is impossible.
To reach adulthood without the sound of honking horn is impossible.
Right?
"What am I going to do? What's a horn? What's a horn?"
What if I'm driving, and the driver in front of me doesn't notice the green light.
"Damn I want to honk the horn, damn I want to! But what if there's a kid in that car.
I can't startle him!!!"
I'm picking up a friend. But he doesn't notice me.
"I should sound the horn. But wait, maybe there's a kid here!
I can't startle a kid, you know!"
It's impossible to live like that!!!!!!!!!

You?

Well, I'm incredibly bored. It was the first day of school today, so I have no homework and as usual, a boring afternoon with nothing to do.

Don't use 'we' unless it's generally true.
I consider British English to be more proper than American English.
And the Europeans generally have had a more wider view of the world
than the Americans.
Even without the accent, you can easily identify Americans from Brits,
Americans talk loud, and don't listen.
In Australia, they point out irrational behavior by saying, 'that is
so American'.
Although these days, seeing what's happening in Holland and France, with
the Muslim community, every nation is becoming more like US in a bad way.
The US ideal is good, but reality of US... Far from it.

As far as instructed at Japanese colleges by AMERICAN lecturers,
English discussions lead to straight conclusions,
and German to the same, but through quite many minutiae
like gears in a crafted Swiss watch,
and French, through twists and turns like wine-drunken talks,
to, oddly enough, a refined or just FOUTU conclusion.
By the way, I want to say that sincerity is the best thing in
a thread like this where most participants are Japanese who are
almost crazy to gain English abilities. To confess, I'm one whereof
so here I dare to offer counsel to you, faithfully.

Read Japanese academic papers, court rulings, research papers.

So, is it the language, or the culture?

Canadian English is somewhat of a mix between
American English and British English.

British spelling, American words.

Interesting.
So if they go by British spelling, then they must go by British Grammar
with American words.
There was a professor who taught Australian politics in my Japanese Uni,
who always made a point that 'Globalisation' is the PROPER way to spell it.
Yet he didn't know 'Pride and Prejudice' by Jane Austin, which was
a headline of a Australian political magazine.

He is wrong. That form isn't listed in the Oxford English Dictionary, which is the authoritative English dictionary.
The correct way to spell it is "globalization".

If they happen to be older or younger, I don't really care, as long as
the age gap isn't too big.

824 :keira:2006/09/01(金) 15:33:02
No, never heard of it. o.o

I've been surfing the net for a while, and a window popped up which
said "your computer seems virus-infected. WinAntiSoft ware is highly
recommended to be used" or something like that. However, I felt
the advertisement was really suspicious. So I googled the software's
name. After that, I noticed I almost got tricked into downloading
bogus software.

Everyone, beware.

Ah, sorry. My mistake.
Black Worm is a name of bogus virus by which "Winfixer.com", the
manufacture of the software mentioned above, tries to lure
internet users to download Winantisoftware.

Did I make myself clear?

>>826
I'm not sure why the advertisement poped up, because my browser
has such blocker. Anyway, the point is, the trick was really well
made out. I mean, you get linked to a webpage first and it says
what I wrote just now. It takes advantage of people.
In fact, in the website I found, many people posted "thank you
for the info. I felt so worried I almost purchased the software."
or something like that.

America was thought to win the world basketball, but today they lost
against Greek.

the final is Spain vs Greek on 3rd, is that right?
I gotta see this match!

885 :Kouki:2006/09/02(土) 00:45:39
>>884
That's right. Also do you remember Spain beat Japan?
I think I'll take the side of Spain this time.

Yeah, maybe Spain will beat Japan if you take the side of Spain..haha^^||

887 :Kouki:2006/09/02(土) 01:12:25
Ah, no, I won't support Spain when Japan has a game versus Spain..
I must've been ambiguous, but what I meant was, Japan lost against
Spain in the group league stage and that's why I'm more supportive of
Spain than of Greek in the final game.

Oh then that's make sense! lol sorry Kouki,

Now you are talking!

This is just background information I've remembered now, but
If I'm not mistaken, Spain has several NBA players
while Greek has no such players. I don't know how strong Greek
national team is, but now that the team has beat America(all members
belong to NBA team), I guess the game will be really exiting.

I hope we can talk about the final.:)

890 :NBA:2006/09/02(土) 01:38:17
Yeah, ok then I will name myself NBA for awhile...lol so that you can
find me again. Then Greek did a really good job, huh? BUt the I should say that
The game is never over till the fat lady sings...

891 :Kouki:2006/09/02(土) 01:55:25
>>890
That's great.
And yes, I think Greek must've done really good, though I didn't
watch the game.

By the way, who's the fat lady? I'm afraid I have no idea.
Hmm, a fat lady from some country sings her national anthem
at the end of every game or something?

[Q] From Caroline Francis Carney: “Do you know the origin of the expression
It’s not over until the fat lady sings? I believe that it’s a reference to
opera. My friend Paul credits this saying to Yogi Berra in reference to a
baseball game. Who is right?”

[A] It’s usually taken to be a reference to opera, so many performances of which
seem to end with a set-piece aria by a well-built soprano, but its recent links
are mainly with sport, so much so that some people think that is the origin.

Commentators do often say the phrase to remind people that it’s the final result
that matters, often in a spirit of reassurance to the supporters of the losing
team. It has been suggested that it was the brainchild of the San Antonio TV
sports editor Dan Cook. It’s probably not one of Yogi Berra’s phrases, though it
has the same sense and much of the style of his “It ain’t over till it’s over”,
which he is said to have coined in 1973.

These comparatively recent sports’ associations disguise the fact that it is
actually a rather older expression, which occurs in several forms: “It ain’t
over till the fat lady sings”, “The opera isn’t over until the fat lady sings”,
or “Church ain’t out ’till the fat lady sings”.

This last version appears in a 1976 booklet entitled Southern Words and Sayings.
Ralph Keyes wrote a book with the title Nice Guys Finish Seventh in which he
says that several informants recalled hearing the expression for decades before
it suddenly became nationally known in 1978. The use of church here suggests
that its origin wasn’t tied to opera, either, but to church-going.

>>920

My apologies, I didn't mean to be condescending.

The song is considered something of a classic, and can be seen as
a parallel to the songs of the Beach Boys - whereas the Beach Boys
sing upbeat songs about the joys of summer, sun, the beach, friends, etc.,
California Dreamin' is a downbeat song about the sadnesses of
winter and loneliness.

923 :keira :2006/09/02(土) 04:34:13
Yeah, that's a good song. Somehow it gives a nostalgic feeling. n_n

>>922
I see. I have not of their songs heard before. I have seen the name before.
I have not heard much Beach Boys, too. I have a CD of theirs, only.

>>924

The Mamas & The Papas only have a couple of really big songs.
California Dreamin' is one, Monday Monday is the other one that
comes to mind. Mama Cass (one of the members) had a prolific solo
career as well, with "Dream A Little Dream of Me" being her big hit.

As for the Beach Boys, any Best Of CD will get you the hits as well
as a copy of "Pet Sounds", which is considered by music critics to
be one of the best albums of all times along with Sgt. Pepper's
Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles.

Hello.

I went out to participate in a seminar today. On the train on my way back
from the venue, an elderly male seated himself from across mine. And
I saw him putting his little finger into his nostril and started
digging it with all his might. I felt kind of awkward when my eyes met
his. But he was really awsome and cool.
HE ATE HIS BOGY. Really. I couldn't help grinning. I wanted to
say, "What are you doing in public? How old are you?"
I've never met one person who eats his own bogy since I was an
elementary student!
