ということで、今日もまっすぐ帰ってきた・・・。今週は予約があんまり取れていないんだ・・・。でも、少しレッスン減らしたい気もするから、我慢、我慢。明日はドイツ語だし。

then, i have a very rudimetary question for you^^;(sorry).
how do you differeciate the use of words "relations" and "relationship?"
because in japanese, there is only one word for this; kankei.
I've looked up in the dictionaries but still not clear.
when you have "international" and it's almost always followed by "relations", but
"kankei" between companies is "relationship" not "relations".....?
Could you help me out here?

30 :merkin ◆BeSm0ofY92 :2006/10/01(日) 09:11:56
>>9
Don't leave! We need more Japanese people on here!
>>29
It's difficult to explain. ^_^'
I'd say that 'relations' refers to the overall relationship as the sum of the
individual ones (like "business relationship", "social relationship",
"romantic relationship"). You can have multiple relationships with somebody,
but overall they'd be your relations with them.
So - relations is general, relationship is singular. That's how I think of it, at
least.

31 :merkin ◆BeSm0ofY92 :2006/10/01(日) 09:14:51
As a note in general - if you would like native speakers to correct
your grammar (or, hopefully, to say 'Yes, that's correct!') please feel
free to post any questions (in English, please.)
If it gets to be overwhelming, then we'll just start a new thread.

As an aside, I'd say that most native English speakers can usually
tell what even the poorest use of English is trying to say. Every
day I deal with people for whom English isn't their native language,
and it's not usually a problem for us understanding each other.

32 :名無しさん@英語勉強中:2006/10/01(日) 09:30:46
>>30
thank you sooo much for your very clear explanation!
your explanation was much much clearer than those from dictionaries^^
now i can be more confident when i encounter the situations where i need to use those words.
I used to say "international relationship", which caused a big erruption of laguter
among native english speakers, LOL^^
>>31
thanx again for your very kind suggestion!
i'm sure i'll have to bother you with english-realated questions from time to time and i'm sure other leaners
must be very appreciatvie, too.
thanks a million!!

どういたしまして。 As you've probably figured out, "relationship" by
itself usually means "romantic relationship". (~_^)

I've looked through some of the Japanese -> English dictionaries for
Japanese people - and good grief, some of the definitions are awful.
It's also very obvious when textbooks have "sample dialogue" written by
non-native speakers.

Indeed, it's such a pity that some of the dictionaries and text books are not even proof-read by native english speakers.

I have another very very emberrasing experience about english.
When we see very good amature golf players in japan, we ask them
"Anata-wa single desuka?", meaning "Are you a single (or low) handicapper?"
So when I saw a very good foreign golf player I translated the japanese sentence directly into englishe and asked,
"Are you single?"
and the the reply was
"No, I'm sorry I'm married with children."
.....Then I realized I made a hudge mistake!!!!
But the thing is, that guy was very old and non-attractive at all^^;

53 :名無しさん@英語勉強中:2006/10/01(日) 15:32:20

I don't think she's an angel, but she must be single.

Hee! When I visited Japan, it took me a good two weeks to realize
that anything written in romaji was usally unmeaningful - and that
only about half the time "English" words in katakana were similar
to the original word. ("biking" is an excellent example of that.)

Actually, boobs are just as much a matter of taste as everything else.
I have a friend for instance, he doesn't find breasts above C-cup
attractive. His preference lies in the B-C area. And then there are
plenty of guys who perfer A-B type breast on mature women, and also
plenty of guys who prefer as huge as possible. So yes. It's sorta
obvious, but some people do tend to forget that tastes are different.

Why is it ? Please abolish or Please set back. However please tell me, come on.
Is it a wrong-bind ? It's a wrong-bind. That is, It's a harm ! What do yours know ?

If anybady try(or tried) to kill me, Not by a roundabout way,
Please kill me by rifle, pistol, and knife.
I like lead(Pb) (or Ag, Au) as a kind of bullet(or shell), for better or for worse.
If yours want to kill me, Please kill me. I dont't ran away.
(It is better for yours(and me) to be developed into a bloody affair.)

I don't make the story, and I am not influenced by movies and comics
(That is, virtual reality). For example, By various technologys, humans
could be deprived emotion(ex: grief). That is, It could be possible
to be hinded dead bodys, and It could be possible to be hinded crimes.

What relation is jealousy(not all love)-troubles ?
Is it relation to jealousy(not all love)-control ? Is it a kind of mind-control ?
That is, Is there such a way of making use of jealousy(men and women) ?
If anybady make bad use of jealousy, Naturally enough that is Set back and Arrested or Fined.
I'm very jealous, but the jealousy isn't the source of my heart.
I think that it is important to control by eachself.
In other words, at least me, I think that Self-control is very important in case of jealousy,
and Everybady must not make bad use of jealousy, normaly.
What relation is it ?

2ch isn't the only forum/BBS I visit, but it is indeed one of the ones
I visit the most, especially lately as I haven't really visited any others
for more than a minute or two at the time, maybe once a week.
I think the 2ch board style is a lot easier to casually read/post at,
in comparison to the average western forum, which makes it very appealing
for me, as I drift around too much to be a proper regular at any place
that requires too much continous attention. I can stay at a place for a month
or three, but after that I tend to get too distracted by various things,
such as studies, etc.
I used to regularly visit a chatroom created for
the sake of getting people all over the globe together to talk with
each other in English. A Japanese guy ran it, so naturally he used a
chat look that's closer to this than the average western type stuff.
I frequented that chatroom from the end of '99 to somewhere around 2001,
I think.
My boyfriend spent some time at 2ch/2chan style systems, includin western
versions, as he studied Japanese, and so he kept sending me links to such
places, and I got used to the style rather quickly. Minimalism and
intelligent simplicity appeals to me, so that's yet another reason for
why I like this. And though there are plenty of trolls here, there aren't
many places that don't have any trolls, including in real life. So, I
don't mind ignoring the trolls and enjoying a good casual chat with anyone
who happens to have the time to talk for a bit.

It does appear that way. Though Japan is renowned for their skill with

It's because of the difference in what Japanese and English speakers
expect from what they hear. Japanese has five vowels, English has 13.
Vowels are much more important in Japanese than in English.

The Japanese word 'hambaagaar' has a single vowel sound, with some
longer than others. Because I couldn't get the vowel to be exactly the
same for all of them, and have the long vowels be the right length, it
didn't matter that I was pronouncing all the consonants correctly.

This is why it's so important to differentiate r from l and h from f
when speaking English - you can be sloppy with the vowels, but you can't
be with the consonants.

I completely agree with you, but at the same time, for being japanese, I really envy people whose native tongue has a large number of vowels.
Because it is very difficult to "create" and master new vowels, whereas in their case, all they need to do is select one of the
closest vowels they already have.
e.g., differentiating between "color" and "collar" is very difficult.
But I agree that length of japanese vowels vary a lot, and this seems to be difficult for
non-japanese people to master.
I really wonder why we have so many different languages in the world.

Also, some of the american-way of pronunciations can be difficult for Japanese.
e.g. If you say "warer" instead of "waTer", or "tweny" instead of "twenTy"........if you see what I mean.
This is because we learn English mainly from books, and not so much from ears.
A bit pity.

Interesting.

As you said, vowels are sure really important in Japanese.
As a matter of fact, Japanese voice actors/actresses and news anchor men(women),
I hear, practice pronoucing vowels clearly.
Plus, English rythms and intonations are very different from
Japanese ones, too.

By the way, I watched on TV before, that a Japanese interviewer
asked several English speakers (who apparently hadn't studied Japanese) to
repeat what he said and he managed it, while Japanese people
went blank when an English speaker asked them to retain what he said and reproduce
it.

I don't know why there were such differences, but one thing is for sure;
Japanese people usually have hard time getting used to consonant-based languages.

I also do.

Not to dwell on the topic, but I once read up on Japanese pronunciation
on the net. If I remember correctly, some of the Japanese dialects have
more than 5 vowels such as northan part of Japan's main land.
Personally, people who live there are as if they didn't speak Japanese.

Lolicon = Lolita Complex, i.e. someone who finds underaged girls sexually
arousing because of that they are underaged girls. In the western forum
subculture, "loli" (= a Lolita) and "lolicon" (= someone who has lolitas
as fetish) most of the time, but not always, refers to drawn images
(stereotype manga/anime art styles) of young characters, and drawn
images only, while as (as far as I've understood it) here it refers
to underaged girls in general, whether they be real or just drawn.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lolicon is rather informative.
I'm guessing that "crimer" is short for "criminal". Which would make
lolicon crimers = lolita complex criminals.

No, I said the opposite, actually. That the Swedish was too good to be
machine translated, as I was trying to figure out if you had gotten that
Swedish from a real human, or from some translation program.

An excellent example of why people need to care more about what a
person is like, than what they look like in a moment. Beauty is
easy to create, but a nice personality is a lot harder to achieve.

>>271
Might be. One really shouldn't use a lot of make-up often, or else the
skin will suffer a lot, and look older than what it really is. :-/

" I have never said , "" I love you ""until now ."

Sorry for jumping into the conversation so late, it's morning time here.
I don't think people get offended if Kameda acts as a heel on the ring, because everyone knows
that it can be a part of his taxtics.
But many people are offended because he doesn't follow the rule of showing respect and using honorifics in fron of seniors.
That's the very basic rule that everyone has to follow in this country, even if one is a great boxer.
Further, sportsmen are usually reputed for their well behaviours, so naturally, we tend to expect Kameda to act properly
off ring.

321 :名無しさん@英語勉強中:2006/10/04(水) 08:16:39
Do you think Yukorin will leave the entertainment world if she marries Hamaguchi?

The theme from M*A*S*H is called "Suicide is Painless." If
you ever get to watch the movie, which the television show was
based on, the actors sing the lyrics to the song in a scene.

Since someone brought up the "Family Guy," I just want to add
it's not a very good show in my opinion. It does have many
references to American pop-culture, but it's just not a funny
show. And the past several seasons of "The Simpsons" hasn't
been very funny either. But that's just my opinion.

323 :名無しさん@英語勉強中:2006/10/04(水) 09:15:02
>>322
Thanx very much for you info. on M*A*S*H.
uhmmmmm, the title sounds a bit scary, but I think it well matches with the melody~~
I'm going to google the lyrics.

This is also an old show, but I think "Ally Mcbeal" well captured that time of America.

I imagine it's because of two things:
English grammar is very, very different from Japanese.
English pronounciation is very, very different; there are many more
sounds in English than in Japanese. (You can also spell some names
'correctly' in Romaji that you can't in Hiragana - e.g. 神保町 is
"Jimbouchou".)

381 :名無しさん@英語勉強中:2006/10/05(木) 06:15:57
>>380
I'm sorry, but I don't think there are any names that cannot be spelled correctly
in Hiragana, because Hiragana is a phonetic representation in itself.
The pronunciation of 神保町 is not "JiMbouchou" but "JiNbouchou."
Japanese dones not have the liaison that you have in French or English (and probably in some other launguages, too),
so in the above example, we do pronounce N (not M) even though it's followed by B.
Liaison actually is a pronunciation mistake that many non-Japanese people have when they learn to speak Japanese.

382 :名無しさん@英語勉強中:2006/10/05(木) 06:45:15
>>381
Perhaps merkin would like to say about the sound of M and N.
We Japanese don't part M from N when writing Kana.
The spelling of 神保町 in Kana is Jinbouchou, but the sound of it is Jimbouchou(lips is closed).
If we write these in Kana, both are ジンボウチョウ.

婚約(コンヤク) has the sound of N.
新聞(シンブン) has the soudn of M.

383 :名無しさん@英語勉強中:2006/10/05(木) 06:57:43
By the way, we Japanese have 五十音表, the table of Kana, and use it when learning Kana.
By reading it, we can exercise in the sound of each of Kana.

Do you have any tables for exercise in the vowel sounds and/or the consonant sounds of English?

384 :merkin ◆BeSm0ofY92 :2006/10/05(木) 07:03:19
>>381 >>382
Please decide between yourselves if it's pronounced as an m or an n.

386 :名無しさん@英語勉強中:2006/10/05(木) 08:43:11
>>382, >>384
I don't want to dwell on this topic, but similar thing may be said about English pronounciation of
"code" and "codes?"
I'm not an English pronounciation expert so correct me if I'm wrong here, but when you pronounce "codes",
you still (at least implicitly) pronounce the "d" sound, right?
So it's not directly pronounced as "coz" but still "codz", I guess.
If so, the same thing can be said for Jinbouchou. It's JiN-Bou-Chou, then when they are concatenated, they may sound like JiMbouchou,
but stil, the N is pronounced at least implicitly, it's never directly M.
Sorry about this boring explanation.

387 :名無しさん@英語勉強中:2006/10/05(木) 08:55:01
>>384
some people pronounce "N" while others "M". no one really cares. japanese
are not fussy about pronunciations...

388 :名無しさん@英語勉強中:2006/10/05(木) 09:11:35
M or N, what's that got to do with Japanese people having trouble speaking and listening to English?

389 :名無しさん@英語勉強中:2006/10/05(木) 09:19:50
>>386
Yeah, you're right about
> It's JiN-Bou-Chou, then when they are concatenated, they may sound like JiMbouchou

If we say only ジン, we pronounce jin or jim. We don't care about that when we pronounce it.
As >>387 says, we don't care so much about pronunciations.

After all, Romaji is just a guideline of pronunciation for non-Japanese-speaking people for their convenience.
(So, for e.g., they can find their way at the railroad stations etc.)
So if one wants to learn Japanese, he/she should only pay attention to Kana and Kanji.

indeed greatly outnumber the males.
I've heard theories about that it's due to that many Japanese men

relationships with any women, being one of the reasons for why the
birth rate is going down in Japan.

then you refer to it in singular adjective (example: ice-cube machines make many

Norwegian, Danish and Swedish (though NOT finnish) are Germanic languages,
and so is English. Our alphabets differ from the English one a bit, and
the letter pronounciations aren't the same as the English one, but it's
close enough for us to have a lot easier to learn English than a Japanese
person.
In Sweden you get classes in English from grade 4 or 3, to 11th or 12th grade.

So, while our languages do indeed differ from English, they do not differ
as much for us as for Japanese people, and we also tend to have a lot of
English tv-shows/movies imported and shown on tv, with only subtitles (well,
in Sweden at least) rather than dubbed.
Less language difference + long studies + more exposure = higher skill level on an
average.

'the number of Japanese women marrying foreign men is
considerably more than the number of Japanese men marrying foreign women'

Traditionally in Japan, a husband was considered a "big baby", so the wife had to take very good care of him,
by cooking for him, washing clothes, ironing, polishing shoes, preparing what to ware to work the next morning etc., etc.
And Japanese men took this for granted.
Right now, most women (at least I hope) are against this notion, however, this "role model wife" figure still lingers in the
society and also in women's mind.
So I think what happens is that a Japanese woman marries a foreign man, and the man either does not expect her to treat him as a baby,
or he expects to be taken good care of but he really appreciates it.
On the other hand, a Japanese man who expects to be treated as a baby, or king, at home, and take that for granted, obviously, can never marry a foreign women.

This is one observation, and being a Japanese woman myself, I would love to be treated as Queen after coming back from a long day at work, LOL!!

It's got _everything_ to do with how Japanese hear and pronounce
English. In English, m and n are very very different; "nice" and
"mice" are completely different words. If you mispronounce "hook"
with an "f", you get something that most people will hear as "fuck".

(English orthography isn't great for the vowels, but it's typically
pretty straightforward for the consonants.)

But if what you observe is really prevalling, then it's very good news^^, I really like that.
Then, why more Japaese women marry foreign men, than Japanese men marry foreign women?
Well, anyways.....
By the way, I'm waiting for David Beckham to get divorced, so I get a chance to marry him.
No chance, I know, LOLz!

Yes, having 'than' is correct. Since you're comparing one thing to

Good Japanese men were killed in WWII.
Today, Japanese men have bad DNA.
That's, I think, one of the reason of that more Japaese women marry foreign men than Japanese men marry foreign women.

I don't like war.
Because the good die, the bad don't die in war.

I live in the biggest metropolis in Japan.
But you are right in that this kind of tradition is more deeply rooted in the country regions than big cities.
Also, this 良妻賢母(Good wife, good mother) figure is strongly promoted on the media these days.
As you observe, this may be the backlash of liberalizatoin of women, if so, this is a very good sign!

>>661
Ah, thank you. That sounds.. Nice?

>>663
Ah, you're not? Okay. I was just asking because many of the more religious
people find that notion insultive.
However, the bible is "just another book". It's far from the oldest book that
gives an explenation for how the world is, it's far from the oldest religon
either... There are many, many other religions out there. It's not even
the only mono-deity religion book... How can one know that that one is
right, and not one of the thousands and millions of other stories?
Some religions say that humans were born from glaciers, others that
we decended from animals-gods (in a non-evolutionary fashion), etc...

This is why merely saying that the bible is instantly true is rather problematic.
What makes it more correct than any other of the old religions, or any of
the newer ones? Is it just because of the Gregorian calendar, and
how well synced it is with the movements of our planet?
The Gregorian calendar is several years off in relation to Jesus' birth,
so it really isn't functional for religion. It's been modified greatly
since it was brought into use too, as it's just a modified version of
the Julian calendar.

recommended WinEdt, so I was going to have a look at that, but I
haven't yet.
*looks at LyX on wikipedia* Hmm.. It doesn't seem bad, but I sort
of like working in the source code. Front Page for instance drove
me insane with annoyance when it kept adding random junk I didn't
want, back in '99 or 2000 when I tried it... I'm a bit of a
control-freak, too. If I can do it in a more precise manner, I'm
often (but not always) more interested in doing so. It depends on
whether it's worth it in the long run or not. something that
simultaneously allows you to work in source code or WYSIWYG would
be rather lovely, though. I liked that bit about DreamWeaver.
(yes, I know FrontPage and DreamWeaver are HTML page editors, but
as a good example as any)

>>675
Sadly, so will you. According to every religion that has some
kind of hell except for the one you follow (or perhaps even
that one), you're likely to go to 'hell'. Especially if the requirements
for that are as few as that "you have to be a follower of this religion".
People usually only follow a single religion, if any. But there are so
many religions, none can really prove that they're more right than
the others....
This, is why I feel that it's complicated.

There's no tomorrow for scums like you.

761 :名無しさん@英語勉強中:2006/10/07(土) 21:09:12
I think I can say for this case, that all the Japanese people feel very sorry for her and her family.
And it is not only Megumi Yokota but many more people have been abducted by NK and have not come back yet.
We feel very sorry for the families and at the same time very angry about NK.
Luckily, new prim minister Abe is a proponent of a hardline against NK and established a new post for
dealing with this issue.
Now the abductees' parents are getting very old, we are strongly hoping for very early return of the abductees.
I saw on the news that 2 Canadians made a very moving film about this case and it was shown in the US.
The film will come to Japan soon (if I'm not mistaken).

why don't you kill 3 birds with 1 stone by becoming a doctor in Hawaii, enjoying the nice weather and retiring early?

910 :或る醫學生 ◆jv9PhcfTmc :2006/10/08(日) 15:58:53
>>909
i think it's a quite reasonable suggestion. but quite contrary,
things aren't just easy as that. If I want to be a doctor in the
US, I have to pass an exam called USMLE first. It's a very tough
one. And next, I have to be a resident in the US for more than three
years. To become a resident, you have to be very excellent in medicine.
So it's very hard to be a doctor in the US. it's almost like an
American dream....lol

911 :名無しさん@英語勉強中:2006/10/08(日) 16:06:21
>>910
I see...uhm...life is tough.
When I wrote 909, I had Dr. Fukushima, a brain surgeon, in mind.
Anyways, it's obvious that Japan also needs very good doctors, too.
so it's good in a way that you are forced to stay in Japan~~

912 :或る醫學生 ◆jv9PhcfTmc :2006/10/08(日) 16:20:47
Talking about Dr. Fukushima, I guess he also went through the
same steps I mentioned above. Not only that, I can imagine
how hard it might have been to win international fame only
with two hands. He might say, if I say something like early
retirement to him, it is out of the question.

GEORGETOWN, Pa. (AP) - Dozens of Amish neighbours turned out Saturday to mourn a quiet milkman who killed five of their young girls and wounded five more in a brief, unfathomable rampage.
About one-half of perhaps 75 mourners on hand were Amish.
"It's the love, the forgiveness, the heartfelt forgiveness they have toward the family," said Bruce Porter, a fire department chaplain from Morrison, Colo., who went to Pennsylvania to offer what help he could and attended the burial.

uhmmmm.......very difficult to understand.....
the familiy of the killer is not at fault, but still,,,,,,forgive......

fart, tasty ketsuge burger, and what not.
Aki's burger may stink, don't you think?

I've paid a visit to the hospital where my grand mother stays today.
She broke her leg and had it operated. I hope she gets well soon.

983 :名無しさん@英語勉強中:2006/10/09(月) 22:54:27
I hope she won't get well for ever and stuck in the hospital, and meet her eventual death alone.

Hmm, the news says north korea conducted a nuclear test today.
It's kind of threatening.

But the website of Japan times is still not up-dated.
Maybe the news will be featured on the top page tomorrow.
For future reference, the site is : http://www.japantimes.co.jp/

989 :名無しさん@英語勉強中:2006/10/09(月) 23:15:04
The NEET Republic doesn't need underground nuke-experiment

What news said that?
Is is factually comfiemed??
At least the U.S government hasn't yet comfirmed that.

But yahoo news says today's nuclear test ended up "in falure".
The magnitude level of the explosion was low compared to the
one caused by usual nuclear tests.

I hope it was really a failure. I think Osaka area is relatively
safer than other large cities in Japan.

When I was back home, I happened to see NHK's news report.
Another news source is a report of MSN Japan.

Thank you for the info. Hmm, perhaps the analysis is under way...
Hope it's a complete failure.

He tested both the launch of missiles and nuclear explosion.
You are too stupid to know what happens next. you belive it was a complete failure.

995 :名無しさん@英語勉強中:2006/10/09(月) 23:32:54
What's important is the data they got from the experiment.
They can build up on that to perfect the bomb.
So, don't worry.
